Upper Bhadra Project

Upper Bhadra Project is a major lift irrigation Scheme under implementation in the central region of Karnataka State. It envisages lifting upto 17.40TMC of water in first stage from Tunga to Bhadra and lifting 29.90TMC of water in second stage from Bhadra to Tunnel near Ajjampura, in Tungabhadra sub-basin of Krishna basin.

 

It is planned to irrigate an extent of 2,25,515 hectares by micro irrigation in drought-prone districts of Chikkamagalur, Chitradurga, Tumkur and Davangere. The primary objective of the project is providing sustainable irrigation facility in khariff season and the other objective of the project is to recharge the ground water table and provide drinking water by filling 367 tanks to their 50% capacity in drought-prone taluks of the above said districts.

 

The Government of Karnataka has accorded administrative approval to the re-revised DPR amounting to Rs.21473.67 Cr (at 2018-19 price level) vide Govt of Karnataka order no. WRD 166 VBYE 2020   (P-1) dated 16.12.2020.

 

Upper Bhadra Project has been taken up in 2 Stages and the works under these two stages are under progress.

 

1st Stage

  • Package I-Lifting 17.4 TMC water from Tunga river to Bhadra reservoir in two stages- the work is under progress.
  • Package II-Lifting 29.9 TMC water from Bhadra reservoir to Ajjampura tunnel in two stages- work is physically completed.
  • Package III- Conveying water to CBC & TBC through Ajjampur Tunnel-work is  physically completed.

2nd Stage

  • Tarikere Lift: Providing drip irrigation facility to 20,150 Ha and filling 79 no of tanks in Tarikere Taluk, Chikkamagalur Dist. Works are taken up in 2 packages and are under progress.
  • Chitradurga Branch Canal: Providing drip irrigation facility to 107265 Ha area and filling 157 no of tanks of Chikkamagalur & Chitradurga Districts. The work of construction of CBC for entire length of 134.597 km has been entrusted on tender basis in 12 packages. Works are under progress.
  • Tumkur Branch Canal: Providing irrigation facility to 84900 Ha and filling 131 no’s of tanks of Chikkamagalur, Chitradurga and Tumkur Districts. The work of construction of canal for entire length of 159.684 km has been entrusted on tender basis in 9 packages. Works are under progress.
  • Drip irrigation: The works of providing drip irrigation facility for 40749 Ha and filling of tanks under CBC, 27590 Ha and filling of tanks under TBC & 24123 Ha and filling  of tanks in Jagalur Taluk in Davangere District are taken up in 7 packages and works are in progress.
  • Tank filling works: filling of tanks in Holalkere Taluk, Pavagada Taluk, Challakere & Molakalmuru taluk (off taking from CBC), Sira, Hiriyur and Chikkanayakanhalli taluk (off taking from TBC),   are taken up under 9 packages and are in progress
